New in April 2026: Book “Manor Houses & Castles in Mecklenburg,” Volume 6

In this new book, published for the first time in 2026, we present our twelfth journey through the land of manor houses, palaces, and castles. In total, we introduce 55 very different properties, illustrating their architectural and cultural history with historical and contemporary photographs, accompanied by short texts.

The history of their construction is closely intertwined with the stories of their builders and later owners, including some of the most prominent family names of the Mecklenburg nobility, such as the families von Oertzen, Bassewitz, Maltzahn, Plessen, Hahn, Knuth, and many others. Naturally, the two palaces of the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in Raben Steinfeld and Friedrichsmoor are once again included. The Belvedere in Broda was commissioned by Marie of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and built on a hill offering a charming view over Lake Tollense.

In addition to these well-known estates, we also present nearly unknown houses, as well as some that no longer exist today—shown on historical postcards—such as Bassow, Hühnerland, Miekenhagen, Pokrent, Toddin, Schlieffenberg, and finally Kambs, which was only demolished in 2024. With Schwasdorf and Ramelow, as well as Johannstorf Manor House—which was almost completely destroyed by fire in 2025—ruins are also represented.

Most of the houses we present, however, are in good condition—some of which were in a state of concern only a few years ago, but have since been restored and are now privately inhabited or open to guests as hotels and country guesthouses, as in Daschow, Kaarz, Klink, Ludorf, Tüschow, and Ulrichshusen.

From a historical perspective, manor houses primarily functioned as the centers of agricultural estates. This is evidenced by the Agricultural Museum in Alt Schwerin, established in 1963, which integrates not only historical farming equipment and buildings but also the manor house itself. In Leppin, the manor house, together with its associated farm buildings, still serves as the center of a modern agricultural enterprise. Somewhat unusual today is Mestlin, which was expanded by the GDR government into a model socialist village with corresponding architecture; however, its manor house now stands abandoned.

We can only touch briefly on these topics and offer short insights, but perhaps this new book will inspire you to explore one place or another in greater depth. Otherwise, it may also serve as inspiration for interesting journeys of discovery through the beautiful Mecklenburg landscape.

We also welcome any information about the respective manor houses by email at info@gutshaeuser.de
