The von Plessen Family

The origins of the well-known von Plessen family of Mecklenburg probably lie in the 12th or at least the 13th centuries.

The progenitor of the Mecklenburg von Plessens was Helmold von Plesse (1263-1283). The family resided mainly in the area around Klütz from the 14th until the beginning of the 18th centuries.

The coat of arms of the von Plessens of Mecklenburg depicts a striding black bull on a golden ground, and atop the helmet two red half-wheels stuck all around with twenty-one arrow shafts bearing peacock feathers (formerly stars) at their apex.

Some representatives of the family:

  • Carl Graf (Count) von Scheel-Plessen (811-1892), German politician
  • Daniel von Plessen (1606-1672), German government official and county commissioner of Mecklenburg
  • Elisabeth Plessen (born 1944; Elisabeth Charlotte Marguerite Augusta Gräfin [Countess] von Plessen), German writer and translator
  • Leopold von Plessen (1769-1837), diplomat, chamberlain, and minister of state
  • Victor Baron von Plessen (1900-1980), German explorer
  • Hermann Karl von Plessen (1803-1877), lieutenant general
  • Hans Georg von Plessen (1841-1929), colonel general in the rank of field marshal
  • Hennecke von Plessen (1894-1968), district economic advisor of the Nazi Party in Mecklenburg
  • Christian Ludwig Scheel von Plessen (1676-1752), minister of state
  • Wilhelm August von Plessen (1808-1887), minister of state
