The von Horn Family
“One of the oldest noble lines in Pomerania, the von Horns are mentioned in the regional history of 1198, moving into Mecklenburg early on and from there to Sweden.
“In the current Greifswald district of Pomerania the family owned Rantzin by 1315 and Gross-Kiesow and Lüssow by 1377, possessed Randessow in 1447, and acquired a large number of impressive estates during the 16th and 17th centuries. It spread widely by dividing into three branches, that of Rantzin and Oldenburg, that of Wahlendorf, Buggow, and Clotzow, and that of Frauendorf and Divitz. It continued to flourish later with the acquisition of Quackenberg in the Uckermünde district in 1777 and right down to the present day with its old estate of Rantzin. The family first went to Sweden in the person of Sigismund von Horn, who with others of the nobility of Mecklenburg betook himself to that country around 1363, establishing his seat on the island of Oeland and bestowing his name on two estates, Gross- and Klein-Horn. Through his grandson Olaus von Horn the family reached Finland, where it later achieved great prominence in the two branches of Ammine and Kankas and where several of its scions became famous for their high offices and many dignities.” (From Ernst Heinrich Kneschke, Neues allgemeines Deutsches Adels-Lexicon [New Universal German Lexicon of the Nobility], Leipzig, 1863.)
In the church at Ranzin are to be seen three stone tomb slabs dating from the years 1315, 1357, and 1407, each of which honors a members of the von Horn family.
Today the lineage continues in the von Horns of Germany and the Horn af Rantzien family in Sweden.
