Manor House Poppendorf

Poppendorf is located in the so-called eastern suburbs of the Hanseatic town of Rostock. The village road leads you right to the former estate. Its centered around the manor house, which is now known as “Musenhof”.

The house was probably built after 1690 and later rebuilt and expanded. The Neoclassical façade dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. The large triangular gables with the lunette windows and the clock integrated into the façade of the courtyard are a real eye-catcher. The estate was sold to the Rostock St. Peter’s Church by the widow of the Danish King Woldemar II at the end of the 13th century. After the Reformation in 1566, Poppendorf went to the Rostock Mayor Christoph Bützow. He was followed by the von Winterfeldt, von Berg, von Stein, von Heise, Möhlmann, and Glasow families. In 1934, Wilhelm Ramelow bought the estate. He had the old cottages demolished, began to build a model farm, and devoted himself to the breeding of thoroughbreds.

After the expropriation of the Ramelow family in 1945, the property was used as mayor office, sales point, restaurant, post office, and for residential purposes.

After 1990, Uta Börner bought back the parental estate and, in 1992, founded an association to promote the restoration and preservation of the manor house and its use as Musenhof.

Since 1993, Musenhof has established itself as a permanent cultural feature in the country through different exhibitions and concerts by famous artists. The concerts take place in a prestigious hall, whose ceiling is decorated with illusionistic paintings.
