Manor House Niendorf near Wismar
The Bundesstraße 106 (federal highway) from Schwerin to Wismar. runs through Niendorf. A cobbled side road leads to a roundabout, behind which stands the manor house. It is a beautiful brick building with a richly decorated façade, probably built around 1860. The architect was from Mecklenburg, named Georg Daniel.
The estate was in possession of the von Brandenstein family since 1827. Between 1906 and 1941, Joachim Baron von Brandenstein managed Niendorf. He studied law, worked in the Wittenburg district demesne administration and served in the Schwerin State Ministry between 1900 and 1906. From 1906 to 1918, Baron von Brandenstein was a minister at the Prussian court and representative of both Mecklenburg states in the Federal Assembly. In 1924, he became Prime minister of Mecklenburg-Schwerin within a German nationalist government and held this office for two years. During the Kapp Putsch, communist farm workers were murdered on the Niendorf estate, which is commemorated by a plaque on the manor house. (The Kapp Putsch was a coup attempt in March 1920 aimed at undoing the results of the German Revolution of 1918-1919, overthrowing the Weimar Republic and establishing a right-wing autocratic government.)
The manor house, which was used for residential purposes after 1945, stood empty for many years before new owners were found in 2021, who are now renovating it step by step.
Two buildings from the former agricultural estate are extant; they have been converted into residential buildings and are now inhabited.
Garden Café
From May to September, the manor house restorers run a garden café on Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. The beautiful setting with a view of the park and the manor house invites you to linger.
The enchanting cakes and gateaux are made by master confectioner Marcus Thannhäuser.
Guided tours of the manor house are also available during events.
