Kalkhorst Landscape Park

The construction of the manor house in 1835 was accompanied by the development of the extensive English-style landscape park. The park features a flower garden, a walled kitchen garden, and a rock formation. Next to the garden the chapel with the von Biel family crypt was built in 1889.

Particularly noteworthy was the diversity of species, including sequoias, cedars, ginkgos, cypresses, lime trees, and Douglas firs.

The palace gardens underwent a redesign under the National Socialists from 1935 onwards, with the aim of creating a "people's park of the future" as a recreational area for citizens, combining green spaces, swimming and gymnastics facilities, allotments and functional buildings.

From 1966 onwards the park fell into disrepair and became overgrown. It was not until 1996 that work began to clean up and tend the park. This included restoring the historic sightlines, restoring the rock garden and creating a lake and an arboretum with rare trees and shrubs.

In 2002, during the international garden trade fair "GAFA", the park was named the second most beautiful park in Germany, particularly because of its extraordinary biodiversity.
