Badow Manor House (Palace)
Badow is situated in an idyllic and serene landscape on the edge of the Schalsee Biosphere Reserve west of Schwerin.
The manor house stands on the edge of a beautiful, extensive park with unusual plant features such as a red-leaved oak. After the old Classical style house burned down on January 25, 1905, the von Döring family, who had owned the estate since 1700, had the current Neo-Baroque house built over the 17th century cellar vault to plans by architect Paul Korff. The building has two stories. The park and garden side have massive, one-story, three-sided bays with high pediments and balconies. On the west gable end of the house is an almost quadratic, two-story Neo-Baroque side wing connected to the main house by a small edifice. The manor house has a hipped roof while the side wing has a mansard roof. Some noteworthy agricultural buildings of the former estate compound remain, like the granary, barns, manager’s house, and the stables, which were built between 1912 and 1914.
From 1993 to the beginning of 2001 the manor house was used as a “pony palace” and the park as an equestrian farm. After just a year of its standing vacant a group of Dutch investors acquired the property. In January 2007 it was again up for sale.
The current owner bought the house in November 2007 and had it rebuilt. Next to a privately used section there are four freshly renovated holiday apartments with elegant decor. Guests are received in the imposing entryway with wood-paneled walls and elaborate plasterwork; the restaurant is in the old vaulted cellar.
On top of that, by Fall 2008 new stables with guest boxes had been built. Holiday guests have the opportunity to travel with their own horses and to explore the local landscape on horseback or to use the glassed-in riding hall (98 feet by 229 feet) in the park.
