Wüst Eldena Manor House
Wüst Eldena was first documented on March 12, 1323 when the knight Johann von Gristow and his nephew, Knappe Ghert, descendants of the Prince of Rügen Jaromar I, assigned twelve farms in Wüst Eldena for three years to the Stralsund burghers Conrad and Hermann Papenhagen.
In an exchange in 1326 Duke Wartislaw IV left the village Wüst Eldena to the Greifswald burgher Heinrich Lange, along with the right to convey it to whomever he chose. In the fifteenth century the village was in the possession of the Greifswald family Gorslaw and later moved to municipal ownership by the city of Greifswald, which leased it out. In 1865 the lessee was Herr Vierow; the manor house was probably erected in his time. The last lessee of the 458 hectare estate (1132 acres) from 1912 to 1945 was Bruno Jürgens. During his time several new agricultural buildings and houses were built.
After World War II new settlers received the land through land reform and refugees moved into the manor house. Later a kindergarten and a cooperative store were located in the house, and performances were given in the large hall. In 1975 five of eight apartments in the house, all with stove heating and outside toilets, were rented. During this time the plaster flaked, the roof leaked, the gutters were defective, and the cellar was under water multiple times.
After 1990 the house was sold and in 1997 it was renovated, since when it has been inhabited.
Of the large estate complex three stable buildings are still extant due to their use by the agricultural cooperative during the East German period; fragments of a park can still be made out.
