Weitendorf Manor House near Wismar

Together with Eggersdorf, Neu Jassewitz and Zierow, the Weitendorf estate was owned by the Barons von Biel, a family from Braunschweig-Lüneburg that was ennobled at the end of the eighteenth century and settled in Mecklenburg.

Presumably other estates belonged to the far-flung property of the Biels west of Wismar.  The manor house is a simple country house with a central gable.  Its raised location points to an old castle mott or earthen mound.  The one-storey house is partly inhabited.  Architecturally interesting is the hose stable immediately attached to the house, which was common to many simple manor houses of the eighteenth century.  Remnants of the former manor grounds such as stables with the Bile coat of arms (a hatchet on a shield) can still be found.

Weitendorf has become very well known for its chapel.  It is a tiny brick church from the fifteenth century with a polygonal interior that was also used as an infirmary.  Services were held here until 1982.  Since 1991 the Art Association Chapel Weitendorf has used the building for exhibitions, concerts, and summer symposia with national and international artists.  A “Sculpture Alley” is therefore one of the sights of the small village today.
