Manor House Klein Behnkenhagen
The history of the village of Klein Behnkenhagen is closely linked to the history of Groß Behnkenhagen and Behnkendorf, because originally there was only the village of Behnkenhagen. "Benekenhaghen" was first mentioned in a document on March 5th 1304 when Wizlaw III, Prince of Rügen, granted the property and rights to the villages of Ahrendsee and Behnkenhagen to the Heiligengeisthaus (Holy Spirit Monastery) in Stralsund.
In 1835, the estate was located on the eastern edge of the village; to the west of it there were four farms and some farm labourers´ cottages. The manor house was built around 1870.
With the land reform after 1945, several new farms were built along the village road. During the GDR period, the estate was managed by the LPG (agricultural production cooperative).
The manor house was still inhabited until the mid-1970s. It had four flats, their tenants only had outside toilets, heating was provided by stoves and the house was in very poor condition - the roof was leaking. A "Study on the use of former manor houses in the district of Grimmen" in 1975 concluded: "Vacate and demolish after 1980" and "Small village without presumed significance, intended for abandonment".
