Manor House Markow

Markow is located approx. 10 km north-east of Stavenhagen and has been part of the municipality of Ivenack since 1962. Unlike the surrounding estates, Markow was no secondary estate (ancillary estate, pertinence) to the noble Ivenack estate, but was already owned by the sovereign in the 18th century, therefore a ducal demesne.

At 400 hectares, however, the estate was rather modest in size. The last tenant of the demesne was Ernst Albrecht. One can still guess the classic layout of the estate village, with the typical symmetrically laid out manor house and the row of cottages along the village street. At the centre of the complex the manor house and a barn are extant.

After WWII the house initially served as accommodation for refugees. Although it was used during the GDR era, it was unfortunately not maintained. The result was a gradual decline. The current owners purchased the house in 2017 and began by securing the structure and improving the statics.

The small manor house is originally a 7-axle timber-framed building (oak wood) with a mighty half hipped roof with beaver crown roofing. (A Biberschwanz is a roofing tile that is absolutely flat.) The roof has one dormer on the courtyard side and three on the garden side. The half-timbering of the left-hand gable was rebuilt and all the windows and the exterior doors were renewed in line with conservation requirements.

Part of the ground floor has been made habitable again for the time being. The attic has not been converted.

Behind the house there is a beautiful small, baroque-style ornamental garden and a kitchen garden with a row of fruit trees.
